I was whining at Mark today that he never does...
And I came home to this:
and
I’ve never had roses before. They’re really really beautiful.
I should also mention that he finished the laundry, put all of it away, and vacuumed.
I’m a very happy girl tonight!

– President Obama | TPMDC
I keep asking myself why the Republicans would have agreed to let Obama smack down their nonsense for 90 minutes on live television. And I keep coming to the same conclusion. They’ve started to believe their own bullshit. These people weren’t at all prepared for Obama to...

I need to enhance my cooking repetoire.
So I think when I get some free time (if I ever get some free time; I have so much homework I can’t think straight right now) I’m going to try out a few recipes I’ve seen floating around.
First I want to try making sweet potato fries as per TatianaMikhailovna’s recipe.
I also want to try to make Potato Cream Cheese soup. This recipe looks really good.

My car was in the shop today
The shop is only a twenty minute walk from my house, so when my car was finished Mark and I took Echo on a walk with us to go get it. She behaved pretty well but she didn’t like it — the cars going by scared her and once we got to the auto place her tail stayed between her legs. Pretty sad. On the other hand, it was really cute watching Mark walk her.
Interesting placement
I guess this is a woman from Real Housewives… I’ve never watched it but I can imagine what it’s like. Apparently they’re embarrassed, too.
Me: babe, what are you doing in the kitchen?
Lee: nothing
Me: seriously, what are you doing?
Lee: eating a pickle
Me: well, hurry up so we can press play (on the DVR)
Lee: ok, I'm coming
Me: what's in that bowl?
Lee: nothing
Me: what is it? Are you eating my Thai food?
Lee: no
Me: well what is it?
Lee: my dinner
Me: what did you make?
Lee: I don't want to say
Me: what? why?
Lee: don't make me tell you. I'm ashamed.
Me: don't make me come over there.
Lee: It's cheese
Me: what kind of cheese
Lee: (shredded) mozzarella
Me: so this is what happens when you're left up to your own devices? Pickles and cheese for dinner?
Lee: please don't shame me anymore

I love this conversation. So adorable.
...and since we were in town anyway
I’ve been in need of some new foundation. I’ve always used drugstore brands until I recently got swindled into spending $100 on kiosk-brand mineral powder… which worked, kind of. (The eyeshadows and blush are nice but the foundation doesn’t cover.) Except now it’s started to flake and I’m just done dealing with it.
So made myself acquainted with the Clinique...

Mark and I spent the day in town
We started off the day getting his Social Security card, and once we were done we were starving. So we headed to this fantastic Italian restaurant and split a pizza.
It was scrumptious. We ate the whole thing. And then we had dessert, which was a creme brulee flavored cheesecake. Yum.
I also think I’m going to look up a thin pizza crust recipe and maybe try and duplicate this when I have...

Movie Night
Mark and I had a little bit of a date night tonight — we went out for dinner at a nice restaurant close by, ran to the store to pick up some cookies (dessert!) and then hurried home to watch the two movies we had rented.
First we watched A Perfect Getaway which was weird but pretty good — I think the strangest part was seeing Milla Jovovich act like a regular, everyday goofy...
Reading my Human Sexuality textbook
…some interesting things I’m learning.
“Plato believed that a person could achieve immortality by avoiding sexual desire and striving for intellectual and spiritual love (thus the term platonic for sexless love)”
Mark and I live with my mother
Mark and I got married when I was seventeen — freshly seventeen, a month after my birthday. I was going to be a senior in high school in the coming semester, he didn’t and couldn’t have a job. I worked part time in a coffee shop and was making a $200 paycheck.
So we stayed with my Mom. She gave us the master bedroom and we’ve lived in it for a year and a half now. Its big...

The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien
“For the common soldier, at least, war has the feel — the spiritual texture — of a great ghostly fog, thick and permanent. There is no clarity. Everything swirls. The old rules are no longer binding, the old truths no longer true. Right spills over into wrong. Order blends into chaos, love into hate, ugliness into beauty, law into anarchy, civility into savagery. The vapors...

Dawn by Elie Wiesel
Elie Wiesel’s most well-known novel is, of course, Night. Dawn is supposed to be the second part of the Night trilogy, but don’t expect it to be particularly similar — it’s not. While Night was autobiographical, Dawn is a fictional book about a young Holocaust survivor named Elisha who has joined a resistance movement against the English in Palestine. He has just been...

[Previously: Day Three; Day One and Two; The Set Up]
Originally, I planned on writing a (probably ill-informed and majorly assumptive) screed about what men in the DC Metro area want and do and think (motherfuckers). But rather than assume, let’s look at some data to back up my two major “findings” (I’m such a good scientist it’s crazy - my notes? written on envelopes and Post-Its....
More Relief for Haiti
squashed:
Presbyterian Disaster Assistance has gotten a targetted relief fund set up.
American Jewish World Service has one here.
And I mentioned United Methodist Committee on Relief’s fund earlier.
Church World Service also has a special fund here, but the donation page had some problems at the time I was writing this.
For the non-denominational folks, the Red Cross also has helping out....

College advice?
Would an English degree focused on Creative Writing be a bad idea? I love writing more than anything else, but I also know it’s pretty impractical and won’t exactly have employers knocking down my door. But neither would anything else that I would potentially do. Would a more broad degree (say, Communications) be a better idea or should I do what I’m interested in?
4 Day Weekend
And I did nothing yesterday. So today I woke up and started cleaning. I still need to vacuum but, wow, so much nicer in here.

The Thing Is
To love life, to love it even when you have no stomach for it and everything you’ve held dear crumbles like burnt paper in your hands, your throat filled with the silt of it. When grief sits with you, its tropical heat thickening the air, heavy as water more fit for gills than lungs; when grief weights you like your own flesh only more of it, an obesity of grief, you think,...

The good news is that I’m poor enough that I can probably get on my state’s health plan, the bad news is, Mark can’t because he’s an immigrant. I have a feeling that when we go to Wales to visit that I will be...

We got married in a courthouse.
At 1 p.m. On a Thursday. I was wearing a $50 dress from the Dress Barn. He was wearing clothes that were already in his closet. I drove us there. It took us thirty minutes (tops) and it didn’t cost anything. There were six other people there. My best friend at the time was my bridesmaid (which meant that she held a bouquet and cried next to me) and the guy who was living in her...

I feel like writing about my marriage.
Mark never proposed.
We’ve been married a year and a half. Every few months I’ll just throw it out there, like when I’m watching wedding shows and they talk about their romance and the way the man proposed, and I’ll say, “Well, at least SOMEONE proposed.”
“I DID propose!”
“You didn’t!”
“I did! I said, ‘Do you want to get married?’”
“Yes. After I said, ‘Well, we could get married.’”
“I do...
