Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison

Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison
I’ve also read The Bluest Eye by Morrison but I have to say I enjoyed this book more. There is more myth, more magical realism (though it’s still sparse), more powerful, memorable characters. I loved Pilate’s strength, Hagar’s obsession, Milkman’s realizations toward the end. I felt helpless as Guitar’s resentment toward the racist world we live in became less and less tolerable for him.
This wasn’t an easy read for me. It required patience and attention to detail, but it was well worth it. Read it if you want to fall and hold on deeply to a book. Give it a chance, though. The first half or so of the book may be hard to sink your teeth into, a lot of characterizing and uncertainty, but soon after it picks up and becomes well worth it.
